World’s largest dog, world’s smallest dog

Dogs come in all shapes and sizes big, small, tall, short but these two dogs, Dancer and Moose top the charts in the big and small categories

First the little guy.

“Dancer” is a Chihuahua from Okahumpka, Florida who weighs only 18 oz and stands 4.1″ tall, paw to shoulder.1 When he was born on June 8, 2006, he was so small and fragile that veterinarians suggested that he be euthanized.

Lucky for him, his guardian Jenny Gomes ignored them. Having already rescued the mother whom she had found pregnant, abandoned and malnourished, Ms. Gomes wasn’t about to give up on her pups either. “He was about as big as my thumb,” she says, adding that she didn’t expect Dancer to survive but wanted to give him a chance.

Dancer may have a legitimate claim to the title. The last smallest dog — measured by height — was Danka Kordak of Slovakia, which stood 5.4 inches high, according to Guinness officials

Largest dog

J. Flynn and his wife Wendy of Peabody, Massachusetts own Hercules. Flynn, not a small man himself, weighed 270 pounds and his dog still weighed more than him, tipping the scales at 282 pounds with a 38-inch neck.

Flynn says that Hercules has paws the size of softballs, but is gentle as a baby and wouldn’t hurt a fly. They got him because Wendy wanted a dog larger than their two-year old bull mastiff was. They did think he was big even as a puppy, which is why they gave him the name Hercules. However, they had no idea Hercules would get quite so big when they first got him and Flynn claims he’s done nothing out of the ordinary to encourage the growth other then feed him a normal diet.

Eisenhower said, “What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight — it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”
